Last Week's Meeting
May 25, 2023

We met today for this Memorial Day “Celebration of Life” Service in the Gallery meeting room.  Felt good to be in there for a change – old home space.  Pres. Eric Bubb called the gathering to order at 12:15, and we began with an a Capela version of “God Bless America”, with maestro Charlie Huffman singing the first verse followed by all joining for the chorus.  After we did the Pledge of Allegiance, Pat Bolin took the podium to do an invocation.  He then welcomed our guests, especially the family members of the Rotarians being celebrated today, and explained how the program would proceed, a little differently from our usual Memorial Day services at the Camp for Kids.  Today four Rotarians would take turns speaking about each of the celebrants, including describing their personal experiences.

At this point, I will list the 4 Rotarians and the men each one described.

Karl Roscoe by David McCaughey
Denny Bolte by Jim Porter
Bill Gray by Linn Mills
Carl DiCapo by Kelly Collins

I will not attempt to summarize their words because I probably would leave out points that some folks think should have been included.  Leave it sufficient to say that each of the four men, Karl Roscoe, Denny Bolte, Bill Gray, and Carl DiCapo, devoted many years to the leadership of the Rotary club, and their contributions, physical, social, and financial, far exceeded that of most Rotarians.  Each one in his own way was a most remarkable man.

Kelly Collins provided a thoughtful benediction. Pres. Bubb  noted a thought from Hellen Keller:  “When one door of happiness closes, another opens, but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us.”

A group recitation of the Four Way Test ended this, a most well-done service.
Andy Beyer Recognized as a KCRCF Fellow

Dr. Andrew S. Beyer, DMD was a Rotarian in Club 13 for 10 years – 2005 through 2015. During that time, he was very active on the Membership Committee, the Membership Qualifications Committee and also served on the Club Board of Directors as Treasurer in 2010-2011. He was active in service projects at the Rotary Youth Camp and volunteered for many fundraising activities.

Andy attended Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine and, upon graduation, he moved to Colorado and began his career by acquiring a family-owned private practice. In 2003, he moved to Kansas City and opened an office on the Country Club Plaza to continue his love of practicing comprehensive general dentistry. In 2009, he opened a second location in South Kansas City and continues to serve patients across the metro at both locations.

When not at the office, Andy enjoys spending time with his wife Jennifer and two daughters, being outdoors, playing with his two dogs, and visiting with numerous friends and family.

Within Andy’s years as a Rotarian, he became a Kansas City Rotary Club Foundation Sustaining Member and contributed annually to the Foundation. He continued to contribute after he resigned from the Club and has now completed his commitment and is recognized as a KCRCF Fellow. Congratulations! While Andy, is no longer a Rotarian, he continues to have the Rotary Spirit!

Geeks for Kids Delivery Day
Please join us for the Geeks for Kids Delivery Day Celebration on June 3 (or the 17th if we get rained out on the 3rd). Delivery Day is the best day of our year, and we hope that it will be one of your favorites too. It’s like Christmas on steroids. Join us as 64 kids receive the #Power2Play.  We need 100+ good-hearted volunteers to make this event a success.

Please feel free to invite your friends and family.  Everyone is welcome at LEARN events.  Just give us a heads up about the number of people who will be joining us so that we will be sure to have enough food, water, etc.

About the book:
The Ghent Altarpiece is the most violated work of art in the world.  Thirteen times it has been vandalized, dismantled, or stolen. Why?  What secrets does it hold? Enter UNESCO investigator, Nicholas Lee, who works for the United Nations’ Cultural Liaison and Investigative Office (CLIO).  Nick’s job is to protect the world’s cultural artifacts—from countless lesser-known objects to national treasures. When Nick travels to Belgium for a visit with a woman from his past, he unwittingly stumbles on the trail of the twelfth panel for the Ghent Altarpiece, stolen in 1934 under cover of night and never seen since. From the tranquil canals of Ghent, to the towering bastions of Carcassonne, and finally into an ancient abbey high in the French Pyrenees, Nick Lee must confront a modern-day religious crusade intent on eliminating a shocking truth from humanity’s past.  Success or failure—life and death—all turn on the Omega Factor.

Rotary Youth Camp Update
by Laurie Mozley

Normally the pool would be full by now, but we have encountered a pump problem. The pool will not be open in time for the June 1st event, but come on out and enjoy all the other things the camp has to offer!  Be sure to RSVP so we have enough BBQ. There will also be opportunities to create cards and/or paint rocks for the campers who are coming this summer!
