This Week's Meeting
June 8, 2023
This Week's Speaker is Wes Ory, Commodore, Jacomo Sailing Club. The Topic is: "Building a Love of Sailing in the Kansas City Area and Beyond."

My first experience with a sailboat was in 2015.  I was fortunate enough to board a whale watching trip around San Juan Island, near Seattle, on a 42’ sloop.  The captain was new to chartering and allowed us to “help him” sail. I was blown away with the beauty and challenges of sailing!

Upon returning to reality here in Kansas City, I actively pursued this art, science and a little bit of Voodoo that they call sailing.  I joined the Learn to Sail lessons and Boat Share program at Jacomo Sailing Club in 2018 to be able to sail everyday.  In October of the following year, I bought my bright yellow Sweet 16, Slainte Mhath.  I spent the winter cleaning and learning fiberglass and other skills thanks to several members of the club.  You can find my wife Beth and I at the lake many Wednesday’s most every Sunday sailing Slainte.

Since then I have also been lucky enough to have a J27 follow me home from the Great Lakes.  Hold The Line (J27) has helped me continue to translate small boat skills to bigger boats.  I am always trying to continue to learn and volunteer to help anyone and will go almost anywhere.  This led me to my most recent adventures of crewing for some Great Lakes Racing on a J35, competing in the Chicago/Mac, the Huron/Mac, and the Trans Superior races in 2021.

Last Week's Meeting
June 1, 2023

Following a BBQ dinner in the Rotary Youth Camp’s Dinning Hall, President, Eric Bubb, called the meeting to order, led us in the Pledge of Allegiance, and provided our Invocation.

We had an abbreviated evening meeting. Eric noted Upcoming Meeting schedule including June 29th – “5th Thursday Social” at Minsky’s Pizza (with no luncheon meeting that day) and the Changing of the Guard (COG) meeting on June 22nd, the preceding Thursday downtown at lunch. Eric closed the official meeting with the Rotary Four Way Test.

Thereafter many of us followed Charlie Huffman and Brent Worley on a tour of the new Administrative & Medical Building.  It is state of the art, particularly on the medical side.  As a side note, we saw a pair of old larger pictures of the Camp layout in the very early years and then later as “Project 50”, in 1974 project to update the camp in its 50th year, roughly 49 years ago.  The Camp’s 100th year anniversary is 2024.

Thereafter next the tour continued at the Camp Director’s house (house plus, soon to be a full duplex).  There has been a full gutting and rehab with excellent design and materials, many of which were donated or provided at cost by club members in the construction sectors.  While not yet fully completed, you can easily see and imagine the finished product.  The upgraded facility will later be important in subsequent professional recruiting.

[ as an ongoing scrivener’s note: our local Club 13 Rotary organization has three main legs (like a three legged stool) KCRClub 13 with its various committees;  KCRCFoundation (provides financial support for the Rotary Youth Camp);  &  Rotary Youth Camp.  [each with its own separate board].
KCRCF (KC Rotary Club Fellow) Presentation
Linn Mills presented Megan Mozley with the “Camp Fellow” Wooden Plaque recognizing her $1000 qualifying and generous contribution to the KCRC Foundation. Megan is the daughter of our Camp Director, Laurie Mozley. She spent every summer growing up at the camp working in the kitchen and then as a lifeguard. The only summers Megan missed were due to her volunteer work with the Peace Corps in Jordan. Megan earned a bachelor’s degree and two master’s degrees in counseling. Megan is now the elementary school counselor at KIPP Endeavor Academy, also serving as the District Social Emotional Learning Coordinator for the past two years.

Foundation Fellows are Rotarians and friends of Rotary who have contributed at least $1000. The sustainability of the Rotary Youth Camp depends on the Foundation and your contributions.
Rotary After Hours at the Nelson Atkins

Come join us for an After Hours event at the Nelson-Atkins on Friday, June 23.  We will begin with a game of golf at the Art Course. It is an artist-designed, mini golf experience located in the Donald J. Hall Sculpture Park. Each hole on this nine-hole course presents a creative interpretation of a work of art in the museum’s collection. Tee times are 4:00, 4:10 and 4:20.  The cost is $14.00 for members of the museum and $18.00 for non-members. Call 816-751-1278 x 0 to reserve your tee time by June 16. Up to 12 people can play for each tee time. **IF YOU WANT TO PLAY - PLEASE RESERVE A TEE TIME ASAP, SO YOU CAN PLAY WITH OTHER ROTARIANS! THEY WILL FILL UP FAST!

If golf is not your thing but socializing is, we will have a social time in the Rozzelle Court at 5:00 PM (Drinks and food available and on your own). You can skip the golf and go directly to Rozzelle Court and look for the Rotary seating area!

JoAnn Kinney, a museum docent, has offered to take us on a tour of the actual art pieces that the Art Course depicts at 5:45. If you would prefer to find them on your own you can do that as well. The museum is open until 9:00 on Fridays.

Parking is free for members and is $14 for non-members. There is not an admission charge for the museum. Click here to register so we have a headcount!

Dragon Boat Festival
The Dragon Boat Festival is this coming Saturday (6/10, 10 AM - 2:30ish PM) on Brush Creek in the Plaza across from Jack Stack BBQ. Rotary has a team entered in the Dragon Boat Race as usual and we have a couple of members helping with the dock activities so we encourage each of you to come to the Dragon Boat Festival for an enjoyable time - and to cheer our team to victory! The Society for Friendship with China now has a 20 foot dragon which was "walked" around the Plaza this past Friday to promote the Festival. The Dragon will be making another walk around the Plaza Wednesday at 3:00 PM. More helpers are needed to help the dragon "walk". If you are interested and have time for this fun filled activity, please come to Bolings on the Plaza, west entrance, around 3:00 PM. Please let Jan Armstrong know if you can help with this activity.  816-210-0903

About the book:
The Ghent Altarpiece is the most violated work of art in the world.  Thirteen times it has been vandalized, dismantled, or stolen. Why?  What secrets does it hold? Enter UNESCO investigator, Nicholas Lee, who works for the United Nations’ Cultural Liaison and Investigative Office (CLIO).  Nick’s job is to protect the world’s cultural artifacts—from countless lesser-known objects to national treasures. When Nick travels to Belgium for a visit with a woman from his past, he unwittingly stumbles on the trail of the twelfth panel for the Ghent Altarpiece, stolen in 1934 under cover of night and never seen since. From the tranquil canals of Ghent, to the towering bastions of Carcassonne, and finally into an ancient abbey high in the French Pyrenees, Nick Lee must confront a modern-day religious crusade intent on eliminating a shocking truth from humanity’s past.  Success or failure—life and death—all turn on the Omega Factor.
