Comfort Station -
Now $82K Challeng
e

This summer our campers enjoyed our new comfort station, including state of the art showers, bathroom facilities and three washers and dryers. The new facility should last us a half-century. The total cost was $503K. We have raised $361K. The Hall Family Foundation has offered a $40K Topping Grant once we reach an additional $102K. We recently received an additional Topping Grant of $20K from the Oppenstein Foundation, reducing the challenge goal to $82K.  We are 84% of the way there. Keep those checks coming... Thanks to all of those who have already donated to this cause. Contact our Rotary office for more information.  We can only succeed with your help.

Call for Historic Rotary Photos
On May 20th, as Rotarians were arriving at Union Station for the Centennial luncheon, Leslie Bitterman carried in an historic Rotary photo. Her brother, Stuart, had found it in a local antique shop and bought it for her. Leslie wanted to share the image with her fellow Rotarians. What a treat!

Do you have photos of Rotarians and Rotary events from past years? On October 7th, there will be a table designated for the display of photos to be viewed and enjoyed through the evening. Please bring your photos with you to the Centennial Dinner and, if possible, bring a note with the photo identifying the Rotarians and approximate date.

Rotary Centennial Clock Dedication Ceremony on Oct. 7

Rotarians are encouraged to join us on Thursday, Oct. 7 at noon for the dedication ceremony of the Rotary Centennial Clock.  The Clock, a project of the Centennial and Downtown Committees, is being dedicated on the day of our Centennial Dinner.  There is no luncheon meeting that day, so let's gather in front of the College Basketball Experience and Sprint Center at 13th and Grand and be among the first to say "Meet me under the Rotary Clock!"

We will thank our generous sponsors, Bob and Sally Bibb, UMB Bank and J E Dunn Construction and our project partners from the City of Kansas City, Missouri  -  the Parks and Recreation Department, the Office of the City Manager and the Public Works Department.

Last Thursday - Sept. 16,  2010 by Pete Burgess

President Ford Nelson opened the September 16th meeting at the Muehlebach with thanks to greeters from the Camp Enterprise Committee. Carl Bolte accompanied Harlan Stamper while Harlan led the club in singing "God Bless America". Jerry Munson offered the invocation after President Ford led the pledge.

Hal Lowenstein added a gracious welcome to five guests and one visiting Rotarian who brought a banner from his club in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Alan Corbet gave a "member minute" including the good news that his two married sons living in St. Joseph are graduating from college at the same time.

Ford ask our thoughts and prayers for Chuck Fowler, George Bittner, Ross Donnell, Ross Marine and Tony DiPardo who are in sick bay. Chuck Eddy took the podium to announce the upcoming centennial steak dinner on Oct. 7 at the Marriot. This centennial dinner is for club members only whereas the previous one was open to the community. Dave Wardman was introduced for a thank you to all who helped and supported Skills USA in June.

Our speaker, George Lombardi, was introduced by Ann Johnson. Mr. Lombardi began his service in 1972 as a graduate school intern working with the Missouri Department of corrections. He rose through the system in jobs including warden. He retired and was appointed to be Director of Corrections by Governor Nixon in 2008. Mr. Lombardi gave a brief history covering the evolution of corrections in Missouri where the system expanded from 3,000 inmates in 1972 to 30,000 inmates and another 75,000 on probation in 2010. The increased prison population results from longer sentences, more crime laws, new crimes, mandatory minimums for violent crimes, and better techniques for law enforcement. Part of the increase comes from 1970s and 1980s decisions that transferred population from mental health facilities to correctional facilities. He complemented JE Dunn on prison construction and later said his goal was to be able to close one by reducing the inflow of prisoners. One part of his goal is strongly tied to preparing inmates for re-entry to society. The other part is dependant on good quality early childhood education.

Faces of Rotary

Bowling News by Dick Retrum - Sept. 15, 2010

You're familiar with the expression "close but no cigar" or "close only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades". Well, that is exactly the results of a few high game possibilities during match play today. There were no "high-rollers" (200 plus), but a few close games. We rarely mention names in this case but their initials are: CB 198, JV 192 and DR 190. Another item worth mentioning is Dee Reynolds picking up the 8 –10 split. The difficulty level on a scale of 1 to 10 on picking up that split is a 9. Well done Dee.

Special announcement for bowlers only - The Karl & Kay Roscoe – World Famous Grilled Brats and Beer Bust Extravaganza will be held on Sept. 29 at their home immediately following league play. You won't want to miss this feast!
