Comfort Station -
Now $82K
Challenge
This summer our campers enjoyed our new comfort
station, including state of the art showers, bathroom facilities and
three washers and dryers. The new facility should last us a half-century. The total cost was $503K. We have raised $361K. The Hall Family Foundation has offered a $40K Topping Grant once
we reach an additional $102K. We recently received an additional Topping Grant of $20K from the Oppenstein Foundation, reducing the challenge goal to $82K. We are 84% of the way there. Keep
those checks coming... Thanks to all of those who have already
donated to this cause. Contact our Rotary office for more information.
We can only succeed with your help.

Rotary Foundation Dinner
The annual District Foundation
Dinner for the Benefit of The Rotary Foundation will be held on
Saturday, November 6, 2010 at the Airport Embassy Suites. This is our
District's major event to celebrate The Rotary Foundation.
This year's event will tell the "Foundation Story." You will learn
about the Foundation in action and hear about the tremendous giving
our clubs did during the previous year by recognizing the top dollar
contributors and top percentage donors. Guest speaker Jennifer Jones
will share why our generous giving is so important. A silent
auction/reception will begin at 5:00 p.m. with dinner at 6:00 p.m.
The guest speaker, PDG Jennifer Jones, is a member of the Rotary Club
of Windsor Roseland in Ontario Canada. She is President of Media
Street Productions, a member of the RI Communication Committee, the
Advisory Board for Rotary Canada and the Promotions Committee for the
2011 RI Convention in New Orleans. She was a speaker at the 2010
International Assembly and is highly recommended.
There will also be a presentation of the Klinginsmith Cup. This is a
traveling trophy that is presented to the club with the highest
average giving to The Rotary Foundation plus receiving the
Presidential Citation. Who will this year's winner be????
The cost of the dinner is $65 for Rotarians which includes a $25
contribution to the Foundation and $40 for Non Rotarians. This is also
an excellent time to make your annual EREY $140 (Every Rotarian Every
Year) contribution to The Rotary Foundation ($100 contribution + one
dinner). To register
contact Rotarian and
Event Chair, Bonnie Brown at bonniekc@kc.rr.com or by calling her at
816-719-7902 or register on-line at
www.rotary6040.org
Registration deadline is November 1. Checks are to be made payable to
"Rotary District 6040". Registration forms are also available from our

Bowling News by Dick Retrum - October 13,
2010
A
lost and forgotten Rotary Bowling League trophy was recently
discovered hidden away in a storage room at the Ward Parkway Lanes.
All that is known about it so far is that it dates back to 1987 and is
titled "The Walter Packwood Memorial Sandbagger Trophy." It was passed
back and forth, depending on the outcome of a yearly match between
Rotary Club 13 and the Seratoma Organization. Further research will
uncover the rest of the story. Stay tuned.
Back to current events. There is a three way tie for first place. The
Shuddabins, I Have No Idea and The Weir-Do's have all won 13 and lost
3. Our last place team is struggling. Currently it is known only as
"Team 8" with 2 wins and 14 defeats. The team Capt. Norm
Waters has been on injured reserves (bad back) for the first
five weeks of the season. He is expected to be on the lanes next week.
Our high games today were: Rick Crouch 214 & 201, Ted
Middendorf 204 and Bob Lager picked the 3-7
split. Congratulations.
Reach Out for Literacy!
Here's
your chance to make a significant impact on dozens of kids for just a
small investment of time. And it's
an impact that will reap benefits over and over again. Grab a teammate
and sign up to deliver super-dictionaries and Rotary-imprinted pens to
third graders in one of 21 area elementary schools in the Kansas City
area.
It's all
part of the annual Dictionary Project of Kansas City, sponsored by
Reading Reaches, Inc., a local nonprofit organization dedicated to
making sure every third grader has a dictionary.
For details, download the attached that includes a list of schools.
Choose your school or we'll
assign one to you. Then email Jane Lee at
jane@janeleecomm.com to let us know your name, email address, school
preference, if any. Let us know the name of your teammate or if you're
going solo.
We'll even
provide a script so you don't
have to worry about what to say during your 15- to 20-minute
presentation to the kids.
Once we hear from you, we'll
confirm your school choice and provide details on when and where to
pick up your dictionaries and pens.
This is fun event. You won't
want to miss it. TYROS, you get 10 points!

Our meeting at the at the Muehlebach's Trianon Room proved that
gremlins do practice for Halloween in the sound system. President
Ford Nelson drew attention to the New Banner as he
opened the meeting. Jerry Munson came to the podium
to lead us in singing "America The Beautiful"
while Carl Bolte accompanied on the piano. Ford then
led the pledge and called on Pat Bolin to offer the
invocation.
Past President Rick Halterman addressed the club in a
memorial to Greg Wright who passed
away on October 8, 2010.
Sally Nelson welcomed guests and then welcomed
visiting Rotarians while gremlins in the sound system continued to
crank their pranks.
Pat Dunn
had ankle surgery and was included in thoughts with
Chuck Fowler, George Bittner and
Tony DiPardo who are recovering. A usually reliable source
reports that Ross Marine has recovered enough to be
traveling again.
President Ford introduced Wes Wingfield
for a pitch on membership development. Somewhere during that
presentation Wes must have cussed the gremlins, and
the sound cleared. Tony Andresen stepped up to
recruit bell ringers for our Salvation Army bell ringing project. Then
Duane Benton showed a big promo DVD for the Rotary
International Convention in New Orleans from May 22nd to May 25th. He
reminded us that RI presidents come from Missouri once every 75 years
or so. Despite that worrisome news, the convention setting looks like
a blast.
Two fine new members joined us this week. Rotarian George
Heymach introduced
"Marty"
McInerney
and President Ford introduced Michael Falk.
Anthony Matthies introduced our speaker, Mark Donovan, made a
presentation that included the video put together for the Chiefs
Monday Night Football home opener at the new Arrowhead Stadium. Noting
that the Chiefs have amassed a history of 387 games all under
ownership of the Hunt family, Mark asked that we not lose perspective
in the Chiefs Kingdom where fans do bleed Chiefs red. His presentation
hit three points: Win at everything we do; Deliver
fan experience; and Be active. Go Chiefs!
