Comfort Station -
Now $82K Challeng
e

This summer our campers enjoyed our new comfort station, including state of the art showers, bathroom facilities and three washers and dryers. The new facility should last us a half-century. The total cost was $503K. We have raised $361K. The Hall Family Foundation has offered a $40K Topping Grant once we reach an additional $102K. We recently received an additional Topping Grant of $20K from the Oppenstein Foundation, reducing the challenge goal to $82K.  We are 84% of the way there. Keep those checks coming... Thanks to all of those who have already donated to this cause. Contact our Rotary office for more information.  We can only succeed with your help.

The Bill Brown Memorial Coat/Warm Clothing Drive
The Bill Brown Memorial Coat/Warm Clothing Drive is one of our annual service projects.
Chairman Kent Fulton has received the cooperation of the Marriott Hotel and Salvation Army to have drop-off containers available in the entry lobby of the Muehlebach Hotel (Wyandotte Street side). Plan to bring your coats and warm clothing to our Rotary luncheon meetings on Thursdays,
Nov. 18, Dec. 2 and Dec. 9.
This drive is important to the many people in Kansas City who need clothes. If you haven't worn it in two years, you probably no longer need it.
We will need a couple of volunteers to assist with the weekly collections from 11:00 a.m. to noon.
Tyros, you can earn six points for helping with the collection. If you can help out or have questions, contact Kent Fulton at 913/236-7223.

Bowling News by Dick Retrum - October 20, 2010

Karl Roscoe celebrated his 39th...ah...45th...ah....58th  birthday today at Ward Parkway Lanes. However, we (his fellow bowlers) counted 76 candles on the spooky decorated Halloween cake provided as a surprise by his wife, Kay. To honor this special occasion, Karl got into the spirit of high numbers by bowling a 220. He has not been in that range for the past three years.

Our other spooky bowlers were: Dave Boone 234,
Ted Middendorf
218, Maurice Brownlee 203, Bob Weir 202 and Wesley Gill picked up the 6-7 split. Congratulations.

There is a fun and new addition to our bowling experience this season. Al Tikwart brought us a cap that looks like a cartoon charter turkey. This gobbler cap gets passed around to any bowler who rolls a "turkey" (three strikes in a row). They must wear it until someone else gets one. Today on lanes 10 & 11 four bowlers in the third match rolled turkeys almost in succession. They all got to wear the cap but not for very long. Congrats and Happy Halloween.

Last Thursday - October 21,  2010 by Pete Burgess

October birthday greeters welcomed members to a memorable meeting. President Ford Nelson called us to order and got Jerry Munson up to lead the singing while notable Carl Bolte accompanied. Ford led the pledge and Eric Graham provided the invocation. Rick Usher welcomed our guests and three visiting Rotarians including George Cook who serves as president of the Downtown Overland Park Rotary Club.

Jay Menitove held a
"Member Minute" with stories from The Community Blood Center. President Ford told us that George Bittner and Tony DiPardo are still recovering and Pat Dunn is healing up after ankle surgery. Jane Lee and Chris Hope got on the Dictionary project. We have distributed 1,520 dictionaries to 24 schools. Chris gave a good summary of the project's success then provided a song of inspiration to celebrate the project. Past President Denny Bolte gave insightful remarks in his memorial for Chuck Fowler who passed away on October 13th.

Sherilyn Seitz introduced our Centennial Business Executive of the Year, Michael R. Haverty who spoke while in the clutch of a cold that couldn't hold back a great talk that received a standing ovation. He focused on two things: KC Southern's impressive development over the last 15 years; and the resurgence of Union Station after its remodeling. The KC Southern line ran from Kansas City to the Gulf in 1992. It was to be sold, but this 4th generation railroader from Atchison saw value and worked to expand the railroad to its present network of lines that serve the U.S. Midwest, Mexico and Canada. The company even has a line in Panama that parallels the canal.

Union Station was built in 1914 and rebuilt in 1999. More than have the funding for renovation was private. Its huge open spaces were designated as "free and open" so no retail was permitted despite enormous costs for heating and cooling. The enterprise went heavily into the red with the venues that opened with the new renovation. When business guidance replaced the initial organization things changed. The staff went from 300 to 50. Outsourcing replaced permanent staff and experienced managers were brought in to run things. Union Station is now $1,600,000 in the black with 85% leased. Four major new tenants signed on in the last nine months: The Chamber of Commerce, The IRS, The International Visitors Bureau, and the Kansas City Election Board.

Both ventures chaired by Michael Haverty are greatly successful turnarounds that exemplify his selection as Club 13's Centennial Business Executive of the Year. Well Done!

THANK YOU C.U.T. (Clean Up Trash) Team!

On Friday, October 15, Eric Bubb (Tyro), Ann Johnson, Barb Martin, Dennis McKeehan and Diane Scott did the quarterly trash pick up along Colbern Road by the Rotary Youth Camp. Afterwards, Dennis treated the "team" to tacos and margaritas! The C.U.T. Team was founded by Phil Kinney several years ago, and once a quarter they meet to pick up trash. If you would like to join in the fun and merriment, please contact Dennis at dbmc45@yahoo.com.

Camp Enterprise 2010 - Part 2 -Business Simulation

by Joann Kinney

This year's students at Camp Enterprise used their knowledge of business to compete in "running
" a virtual manufacturing business - with the help of Junior Achievement's computerized business simulation. The students worked in teams of four to create and sell a fictional product.

This year's fictional product was a portable hologram (three dimensional) projector, for business and personal use. It would be like a 3D image projector, the size of a portable CD player.

Each team entered online their decisions on pricing, production, marketing, capital investment and Research & Development. At the end of the weekend the winning team was the one whose business scored the highest in:

Retained Earnings (50%)
Supply and Demand Potential (20%)
Productivity (10%)
Market Share (10%)
Growth (10%)

The three photos  (taken by Henrik Andersen) show three of the teams doing online research as they made decisions for their businesses. They were able to "click" on Reports to see what their competitors did in the previous quarter. They could "click" on Analysis to see bar charts showing data such as orders vs. sales and price vs. cost. They could also choose a section that allowed them to design the colors and the features of their hologram projector.

While doing research and making their business decisions, the students were guided by their Rotarian Group Leaders: Don Stebbins (Business Simulation Leader), Henrik Andersen, Angela Augur, Steve Corbin, Gene Freeman, Michael Griggs, Bob Kroenert, Mark Lee, Bill Moran, Brian Powell, Dana Reece, Debra Shultz, Steve Stoecker, Tom Van Dyke and Paul William.

One of the best indicators of the success of this year's Camp is the following note received by Don Stebbins, 2010 Chairman of Camp Enterprise:

Don: Thank you very much for inviting me and taking your time to host Camp Enterprise. I had a lot of fun. The guest speakers were very inspiring, and the business simulator was great hands-on experience. If I could, I would definitely come back. Going home on Sunday I knew much more about business than before.

Thanks,
Spencer Carl, Bishop Miege High School

See next week's Buzz Saw for the lists of: guest speakers, Rotarians who worked on Camp Enterprise, and businesses and individuals who contributed to the weekend and to the live and silent auctions.

Ukraine Trip Set for Early Spring

Calling all professors, teachers, former teachers, politicians and anyone who would like to stand up in front of a group of university students to tell them about life and government in the US of A. We have been invited back to Ukraine, in late April or early May, to spend a week in the university classrooms to do an intense review of what happens here for students who are studying English and to be interpreters. We'll also need at least one IT person to help with computerized presentations there. We will have help here to get the computerized stuff ready. We will also have help from the USUkraine organization in Washington with preparation. This will be the 10th "mission" trip by members and friends of Club 13, and will be the most intense. Contact Bob Lager at mandblager@kcnet.com quickly to get planning underway.
