Comfort Station -
Now $82K
Challenge
This summer our campers enjoyed our new comfort
station, including state of the art showers, bathroom facilities and
three washers and dryers. The new facility should last us a half-century. The total cost was $503K. We have raised $361K. The Hall Family Foundation has offered a $40K Topping Grant once
we reach an additional $102K. We recently received an additional Topping Grant of $20K from the Oppenstein Foundation, reducing the challenge goal to $82K. We are 84% of the way there. Keep
those checks coming... Thanks to all of those who have already
donated to this cause. Contact our Rotary office for more information.
We can only succeed with your help.

The Bill Brown Memorial
Coat/Warm Clothing Drive
The
Bill Brown Memorial Coat/Warm Clothing Drive is one of our annual
service projects.
Chairman Kent Fulton has received the cooperation of
the Marriott Hotel and Salvation Army to have drop-off containers
available in the entry lobby of the Muehlebach Hotel (Wyandotte Street
side). Plan to bring your coats and warm clothing to our Rotary
luncheon meetings this Thursday,
Nov. 18
and on Dec. 2
and
Dec. 9.
This drive is important to the many people in Kansas City who need
clothes. If you haven't worn it in two years, you probably no longer
need it.
We need a couple of volunteers to assist with the weekly collections
from 11:00 a.m. to noon on Dec. 9.
Tyros, you can earn six points for helping with the collection. If you
can help out or have questions, contact Kent Fulton
at 913/236-7223.
Membership Proposals
The Membership Classification and Qualification Committee have
approved the following applications. They will be reviewed at the
November 17, 2010 board of directors meeting. In accordance with
Article IV, Section 1 of the Club Bylaws, these applicants will become
members unless a written objection is received in the Rotary office by
November 29, 2010.

Four
new members and their sponsors welcomed members today. President
Ford Nelson called the club to order and nary a word
was spoken about the election results. Bob Lager led
the singing while Carl Bolte accompanied.
Ford led the pledge and George Heymach gave
the invocation. Brian Alexander welcomed our three
guests.
Good news is a special welcome back greeting to George Bittner;
and more good news is that Tony DiPardo is getting
along better. Pat Dunn made it back to the office and
continues recovery from his ankle surgery. We had the sad news that
Teresa Montgomery lost her son, Trevor Olson on
Sunday, October 31st to a fatal car accident.
Lee Brumitt, Mark Snow and
Curt Watkins stood to be recognized as candidates in the
running for the three Club 13 Director positions. Kent Fulton
took the podium to announce the annual Bill Brown Warm Clothing and
Coat Drive .
President Ford gave a special welcome back to
George Bittner who came forward as the sponsor of a new
member, then Past President Myron Sildon took on the
strange and wonderful microphone to announce the four new members and
had their sponsors introduce them. The new members are: Mike
Dann, Kliff Kuehl, Brian
Powell and Charley Smith.
Following the introduction of our newest members of Club 13,
Tony Andresen introduced out speaker, Lynn Parman who told us
about the Animal Health Corridor and what it means to our area. Lynn
focused on the business aspects of the venture that has brought new
vibrant commercial life to a share of our Midwestern heritage. The
corridor runs from Manhattan to Columbia and numbers 220 companies as
well as having a third of the world’s animal health businesses. Four
of the ten largest animal health companies are in our region and three
of the ten animal research companies. Growth in the corridor’s
influence over the last five years is shown in attendance at the
annual conference of animal health company executives that first meet
here five years ago with 100 executives and has grown to 750.
Companies are relocating here.
Another influence related to the corridor came up following the
presentation when the Lynn talked about the Department of Homeland
Security spending $600 million plus to relocate the Bio Science Lab to
the campus of Kansas State University . And this last note: 90% of the
vet school graduates are females who normally do not follow the path
into large animal care.
Tyrotarians Achieve their 100 Participation Points in our
Tyro Orientation Program
 This
week, Brian Alexander,
(l.)(President/CEO, National WWI Museum at Liberty Memorial)
and Sally Nelson (r.) (Associate
Broker with Reece & Nichols Country Club Plaza) have reached their 100 points by participation in various
functions.
Brian
and
Sally,
you may remove the red ribbon from your badges. Great
job.
Ukraine Trip Set for Early Spring
Calling all professors, teachers, former
teachers, politicians and anyone who would like to stand up in front
of a group of university students to tell them about life and
government in the US of A. We have been invited back to Ukraine, in
late April or early May, to spend a week in the university classrooms
to do an intense review of what happens here for students who are
studying English and to be interpreters. We'll also need at least one
IT person to help with computerized presentations there. We will have
help here to get the computerized stuff ready. We will also have help
from the USUkraine organization in Washington with preparation. This
will be the 10th "mission" trip by members and friends of Club 13, and
will be the most intense. Contact Bob Lager at
mandblager@kcnet.com quickly to get planning underway.
Bowling News by Dick Retrum - October 20,
2010 (Part 2)
Last
week a trophy was found hidden away at the Ward Parkway Lanes. It's a
serious trophy, made out of heavy wood and brass. They don't
make them like this anymore. It dates back 23 years to 1987 when it
was created to be awarded to the winner of an annual match between
Rotary Club 13 and the Downtown Sertoma Club. Possession of this prize
went back and forth until 1994 when the Sertoma Club could not field a
team due to dwindling membership. Soon there after it completely shut
down.
The title of the trophy "The Walter Packwood Memorial Sandbaggers
Trophy"
was named after (naturally) the person who organized the contest. He
was a well known bowling sandbagger and a member of both Club 13 and
Sertoma. If you don't remember Walter, you might recall his son, Bill
(Squeaky) Packwood. The last club to win the trophy was Sertoma in
1993. The contest between the clubs was held at Ward Parkway Lanes.
But it is unclear how it ended up in storage there. Speculation
suggests that the Sertoma bowlers had no place to put it and Club 13
could not make claim to it. We are happy it was found and returned to
the bowling league. Thank you Sherilyn Seitz
for rescuing this part of Rotary history and how appropriate that it
happened during our 100 year celebration.
What should we do with this handsome historic bowling statue? One idea
is that it be recycled, made new again with a different purpose and
new brass plating to be awarded for a yet to be determined bowling
achievement. If so, it will be a big hit at the season ending bowling
awards banquet in May. And now you know the rest of the story.
Bowling News by Dick Retrum -
November 3, 2010
A
top-level meeting of league officials was held after match play today
at an undisclosed secret location.
A plan was hatched, discussed, debated.
This went on into
the early morning hours and finally
unanimously approved.
We agreed to recycle, upgrade and use the recently discovered
Walter Packwood Memorial Sandbaggers Trophy as the leagues new "First
Place Championship Trophy". It
will
be upgraded with a new engraved title plate on the front of the trophy
and a large blank metal plate on the backside for listing each years first
place team. The Captain of
the
winning team will take it home until a new team is
crowned the following season.
Each member of the first team will receive a plaque with their
name on it stating their first place status.
It's good when a plan comes together and a grand old trophy is
brought back to life.
Speaking
of grand. Our high game bowlers were:
Kent Verden 222,
Dave Boone 213 & 200,
Wesley Gill 210, her first of the season and Rick Crouch 205.
The
"Weir-Do's"
are tied for first place.
When asked about his teams standings, team Capt. Bob Weir
indicated that he is exactly where he thought his team would
be and was
ready for all challengers.
He also wanted to remind everyone not to forget to turn their clocks
back on Nov.
7.
He said,
"I'm
going to turn mine back to when I was 20".
Bowling News by Dick Retrum - November
10, 2010
The lanes were
on fire this evening. A record breaking 11 games over 200 were
announced and applauded by the league. The list starts with
Bill Buckner with the highest game of
248. Then,
Henrik Andersen rolled a 236; Dan Couch
227 & 212; Peter Ho 226;
John Reynolds 207; Rick Crouch 205 &
202;
Dick Retrum 203;
Norm Waters 201 and Dee Reynolds 201.
Amazing. The bar has been set. The Gobbler Cap was passed around so
many times today, I lost track of all the turkeys who earned the right
to wear it. Sorry, I'll keep better track of that stat in the future.
It was good to see
Norm Waters back in action today. He has
spent the past ten weeks nursing a sore back. But after rigorous
stretching exercises, visits to the chiropractor and massage therapy
he is back in fine form. His next challenge will be picking a name for
his team. The first name submitted was soundly rejected by league
officials as being too explicit. At this point they are known only as
Team 8 and they are still holding on to last place.
Dan Couch was back on the lanes today. No one loves this game more
than
Dan. He plays it well and hates not being able to join us full time.
We do too.
A quick glance at the "total pin count" shows seven bowlers within 100
pins of each other. But leading the pack is Kent Verden with 4,406
pins knocked down. Congratulations. If you show up every week and bowl
over your average, you can hold off all contenders.
The Weir-Do's are still in first place and that is just plain weird.
One more item of interest about the "Sandbaggers Trophy". It has now
come to light that
Dennis McKeehan should be given credit
for recovering this piece of league history. Thank you. If there is
anyone else out there who had any participation in bringing this
trophy out of its hiding place......just keep it to yourself.
