Comfort Station - The 2009 -
Now $197K
Challenge
This summer our campers enjoyed our new comfort
station, including state of the art showers, bathroom facilities and
three washers and dryers. The new facility should last us a half-century. The total cost was $503K. We have raised $246K. The Hall Family Foundation has offered a $40K Topping Grant once
we reach an additional $217K. We recently received an additional Topping Grant of $20K from the
Oppenstein Foundation, reducing the challenge goal to $197K. To
date, we have received $119,129.95
leaving us just $77,870.05 to go. We are 84% of the way there. Keep
those checks coming... Thanks to all of those who have already
donated to this cause. Contact our Rotary office for more information.

Mark your calendars for Rotary Camp Golf
Classic on June 7, 2010
We're excited to announce the 22nd annual Rotary Youth Camp Golf Classic. It will be held at Lakewood Oaks Golf Club,
Monday, June 7, 11:00 a.m. shotgun start. Registration starts at 10:00
a.m. Lunch, drinks and a silent auction will be provided at the course
with a fabulous steak dinner at the camp immediately following golf.
This is the second largest fund raiser for our camp so we need your help
to make this a great success. Hole sponsorships and corporate
sponsorships are available. We are also seeking donations for hole
prizes, auction items, and giveaways. Call the Rotary office or a member
of your golf committee if you have any questions. The cost is $150 per
golfer, $600 for a team of four, please make your reservation early as
there are limited spaces available and we will be opening registration
to other rotary clubs and potential members. We'll be distributing
flyers as well so watch the Buzz Saw for further information.
We look forward to seeing you for a wonderful day of fun and fellowship!
Rotary Night at the Zoo is set for June 10. Sign up now!
The 6th Annual Rotary Night at the Zoo

explore the entire zoo; Africa, Tropics and Kangaroos will close at 7:00
p.m. due to animal routines and schedules. The rest of the zoo will
close at 8:00 p.m. There will be a special sea lion show, KC Zoo Live
animal show and a Lorikeet feeding.
On the evening of June 10, the zoo will be closed to the public, and
thanks to Rotarian Zoo Director Randy Wisthoff, the
facility will be open only to Rotarians and their families. What a super
evening of Rotary family and fellowship!
Pay at the gate but please RSVP at the Rotary office 816.842-2322 or
janet@rotary13.org so we have a good head count to make arrangements for
food.
Remember, the Zoo is kid-friendly so bring lots of them!
Rummaging for
Rotary Camp
The weather is finally warm and spring cleaning time is here! This year
as you rummage through your basements, attics and garages keep the
Rotary Youth Camp in mind. There will be a Rummage Sale at the Camp on
September 10th and 11th this year to help raise money for the Camp. We
will begin collecting items after August 17th (the last day for summer
campers). You can bring your donations by the Camp or call Laurie, our
Camp Superintendent to arrange for a pick up.
We will also be looking for volunteers to help set up before the event,
"man" the
area during the event and clean up afterwards.

Last
Thursday - May 13, 2010 by Jim Holmberg
Education excellence and achievement was celebrated last Thursday as we
recognized outstanding seniors from the Kansas City school district. EE
committee members Howard Mick, Alan Warne
and Peter Ho and newly elected KCMO School
Board President Airick West introduced the seven, recognizing their
leadership and service within the schools and community presenting each
with a check for $250.
EE chairman Don Giffin introduced Kaufman Scholars
President Dr. Stephen Greene who listed barriers urban students face in
aspiring to and completing post high school education. He told us that
certainly economic factors and doubting mind sets stand in the way of
educational success for students. Green honed in like a guided missile
on "low expectations" which he said is the toughest barrier to overcome.
He said that low expectations are often cloaked with good intentions
such as lowering standards to allow "higher" grades and Green
called for the "bar to be raised". He used a formula to illustrate
his point, saying low expectations equal a low success rate. Conversely,
high expectations plus high support yields a high success rate.
He quoted from David McNally's book Even Eagles Need a Push saying the
push for the nest for the young eagles is "the supreme act of
love".
With a firm thwack to the side of the podium bell President Matt
Meyer called us to order and led the "Pledge of
Allegiance". John Platt gave our invocation and
Karl Roscoe welcomed our visitors and guests. Charlie
Huffman with Carl Bolte at the piano helped us
charge through a rendition of "My Country 'tis of Thee ".
For our Member Minute Henry Leonard told of his
activities and of his life before owning Marthabelle's Print Shop. He
summed it up in saying "I been everywhere but I still live 3
blocks from where I grew up".
Barbara Dolci introduced almost a dozen guests,
including two Rotarians, from Russia who are in Kansas City studying
volunteerism.
Sally Bibb, announced that the centennial luncheon will
include presenting a million dollar donation to the Rotary Foundations.
By the time you read this the centennial luncheon will be history.
Moving on, I look forward to seeing you next Thursday for the annual
memorial lunch at the Rotary Youth Camp. Remember "the Future of
Rotary is in Your Hands". |
