Comfort Station - The 2009 -
Now $197K Challenge

This summer our campers enjoyed our new comfort station, including state of the art showers, bathroom facilities and three washers and dryers. The new facility should last us a half-century. The total cost was $503K. We have raised $246K. The Hall Family Foundation has offered a $40K Topping Grant once we reach an additional $217K. We recently received an additional Topping Grant of $20K from the Oppenstein Foundation, reducing the challenge goal to $197K.  To date, we have received $119,129.95 leaving us just $77,870.05 to go. We are 84% of the way there. Keep those checks coming... Thanks to all of those who have already donated to this cause. Contact our Rotary office for more information.  We can only succeed with your help.

Rotary Youth Camp Rummage Sale -- Mark your calendars and start your fall cleaning now!

Skimmers?

Why skimmer hats? If you were a Rotarian in 1910, you would likely be wearing your fashionable skimmer hat. So when we celebrated 100 Years of Rotary on May 20th, it was quite fitting to see skimmer hats on the 25+ Rotarians who served as volunteers.

When Volunteer Chair Jerry Clark called for help, it didn’t take long to fill the volunteer shifts. Volunteers warmly greeted us as we arrived at Union Station, relieved us of the pounds of canned goods for the Rotary Youth Camp service project, efficiently checked us in, and graciously helped us find our way to the seats.
Thank you to Chairman Jerry and the team of volunteers who made the May 20th Centennial Event run so smoothly. (Pictured left is Mary Lynn Clark and Edie Waters.)

Rummaging for Rotary Camp

The weather is finally warm and spring cleaning time is here! This year as you rummage through your basements, attics and garages keep the Rotary Youth Camp in mind. There will be a Rummage Sale at the Camp on September 10th and 11th this year to help raise money for the Camp. We will begin collecting items after August 17th (the last day for summer campers). You can bring your donations by the Camp or call Laurie, our Camp Superintendent to arrange for a pick up.

We will also be looking for volunteers to help set up before the event, "man" the area during the event and clean up afterwards.

Rotary Night at the Zoo was a hit!

Over 200 Rotarians and their families and guests enjoyed an evening at the Kansas City Zoo on Thursday, June 10th. The sun was shining and it was a little warm but the hot dogs were tasty and the tour of the Zoo was outstanding. Thank you to Randy Wisthoff for making the annual event possible, to Dick Retrum and Chuck Eddy for organizing the event, Chris Boland, Christy Chester and Jordan Clark for their assistance.

Last Thursday - June 10, 2010  by Jim Holmberg
"What's good for the 'Dotte' is good for the region", Unified Government Mayor Joe Reardon told us last Thursday. Talking about economic development and quality of life he firmly grasped an holistic approach saying “the only way a region like KC succeeds is if we work together”.

Mayor Reardon talked about development and continuing progress at the Kansas Speedway, Village West, including the new Wizards stadium and a third area campus for Cerner Corporation, KU Medical Center and GM's decision to invest $136 million in the Fairfax plant. He also acknowledged a challenge to spread development throughout the entire community.

In that vein he pointed to the grand opening of the Children’s Campus of Kansas City in downtown KCKS. He told us the center not only brings jobs but more importantly it focuses on the education and health of young children who are critical to the long term success of the community.

Reardon said we need to deal with immediate needs, like job creation, and still look to the growth of the community. He told us that that business needs a stable government with a vision and the ability to move toward that vision. Continuing, he said that citizens are willing to engage because they believe and trust in the work of their government. He said he was committed that as jobs are created to guarantee that every citizen benefits both fiscally and socially.

Earlier in the meeting, those of us with mid-year birthdays enjoyed the musical "Happy Birthday" greetings led by Bob Lager and Carl Bolte on the piano. The duo also skillfully guided us through a rendition of "My Country ‘tis of Thee". President Matt Meyer called us to order and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Vivian Gibbens gave our invocation and Jerry Munson welcomed a dozen guests and five visiting Rotarians, including District Governor John Gill. Lifelong KC resident Randy Sisk told us about his business Kitchens by Kleweno in a Member Minute

Phil Kinney stepped to the podium and gave a hearty recommendation for the Rotary Friendship Exchange. He told us about a special friendship he’s developed with a British Rotarian that started with a Friendship Exchange. President Matt reminded us that there’s still a golden opportunity to be named a Paul Harris Fellow for an $800 contribution through the month of June. The Foundation Committee has funds to cover the other $200 for up to 14 Rotarians.

Matt Meyer also recognized the golf tournament committee for a job well done. More information on the success of the tournament will be give at an upcoming meeting.

Rotary Auxiliary Past President Carol Retrum told us about the auxiliary, invited all spouses of members to join and gave two generous donations to the Rotary Youth Camp. Youth Camp Chairman Chris Boland accepted the funds and thanked the auxiliary for all they have done to support and supply the camp. Representing the Entertainment Committee Chuck Eddy gave details on the upcoming COG party at the Clubhouse on Baltimore. If you’ve procrastinated it’s too late to get your reservations but maybe you can still call and throw yourself on the mercy of the Rotary Office.

I look forward to seeing you next Thursday at a meeting of the greatest Rotary Club in the world.

Official Centennial Photo

While many Rotarians took interesting pictures at the Centennial luncheon, the Official Photo of the Club 13 Centennial is the outstanding group photo taken by Rotarian Jerry Crabtree. This historic photo will be seen in publications for decades. For a light hearted comparison, pictured below is a photo taken in front of Union Station at the Rotary International Convention in 1917. Jerry also took an excellent photo of the Club 13 Past Presidents and has made both photos available to Rotarians. They can be purchased by contacting Janet in the Rotary office at a cost of $25 for an 8x10, $45 for an 11x14, and $75 for a 16x20. Jerry will generously donate 25% of the cost of each photo to the Rotary Youth Camp. The photos are posted on the Club 13 Centennial web site with other Centennial merchandise .www.rotary13.org/centennial

Great Opportunity – Paul Harris Fellowships

World understanding and peace motivate the existence of Rotary, and the Rotary Foundation is the means which makes this possible.  Rotarians around the world support the Rotary Foundation.  Through the month of June, Club 13 Rotarians have a great opportunity to support the Rotary Foundation and earn a Paul Harris Fellowship for $800 rather than the usual $1,000.  The Club13 Foundation Committee has funds to cover the $200 difference for up to 14 Rotarians.  So hurry and take advantage of this great opportunity.  Call Janet at 816.842.2322.
