Comfort Station - The 2009 -
Now $197K Challenge

This summer our campers enjoyed our new comfort station, including state of the art showers, bathroom facilities and three washers and dryers. The new facility should last us a half-century. The total cost was $503K. We have raised $246K. The Hall Family Foundation has offered a $40K Topping Grant once we reach an additional $217K. We recently received an additional Topping Grant of $20K from the Oppenstein Foundation, reducing the challenge goal to $197K.  To date, we have received $119,129.95 leaving us just $77,870.05 to go. We are 84% of the way there. Keep those checks coming... Thanks to all of those who have already donated to this cause. Contact our Rotary office for more information.  We can only succeed with your help.

Great Opportunity –          Paul Harris Fellowships

World understanding and peace motivate the existence of Rotary, and the Rotary Foundation is the means which makes this possible.  Rotarians around the world support the Rotary Foundation.  Through the month of June, Club 13 Rotarians have a great opportunity to support the Rotary Foundation and earn a Paul Harris Fellowship for $800 rather than the usual $1,000.  The Club13 Foundation Committee has funds to cover the $200 difference for up to 14 Rotarians.  So hurry and take advantage of this great opportunity.  Call Janet at 816.842.2322.

Official Centennial Photo

While many Rotarians took interesting pictures at the Centennial luncheon, the Official Photo of the Club 13 Centennial is the outstanding group photo taken by Rotarian Jerry Crabtree. This historic photo will be seen in publications for decades. For a light hearted comparison, pictured below is a photo taken in front of Union Station at the Rotary International Convention in 1917. Jerry also took an excellent photo of the Club 13 Past Presidents and has made both photos available to Rotarians. They can be purchased by contacting Janet in the Rotary office at a cost of $25 for an 8x10, $45 for an 11x14, and $75 for a 16x20. Jerry will generously donate 25% of the cost of each photo to the Rotary Youth Camp. The photos are posted on the Club 13 Centennial web site with other Centennial merchandise www.rotary13.org/centennial

Rummaging for Rotary Camp

The weather is finally warm and spring cleaning time is here! This year as you rummage through your basements, attics and garages keep the Rotary Youth Camp in mind. There will be a Rummage Sale at the Camp on September 10th and 11th this year to help raise money for the Camp. We will begin collecting items after August 17th (the last day for summer campers). You can bring your donations by the Camp or call Laurie, our Camp Superintendent to arrange for a pick up.

We will also be looking for volunteers to help set up before the event, "man" the area during the event and clean up afterwards.

Last Thursday - June 3, 2010  by Jim Holmberg
You could almost hear the singing, "everything’s up to date in Kansas City" last Thursday as Harlan Brownlee told us about the state of the Arts in the metro. Brownlee, CEO of the Arts Council of Metropolitan Kansas City told us that excellence in a variety of arts has attracted a higher level national attention to KC as a destination. The Sprint Center, which many contemplated as a sports venue, has become a top concert setting. He pointed to the activity the Cross Roads district has brought to mid town and the arts future for the West Bottoms revitalization. Soon we will be attending events at the Kauffman Center and the Todd Bolender Center for Dance and Creativity.

Brownlee said he’s excited about the collaboration between the Downtown Council, the KC Area Development Council and the Convention and Visitors Bureau to promote the arts in the metro. He continued to say the arts build community, creating a place where people want to live.

He said that although the arts and culture sector here seem to fare better than in other communities there are challenges to overcome. For example the Nelson/Atkins recently had to lay off 30% of their staff to help meet the budget crunch and the downturn in foundation giving is starting to have an impact. During Q & A Brownlee credited organizations like Hallmark, the Art Institute, the UMKC Conservatory and the vision of city leaders in bringing outstanding artistic talent to KC.

Bob Lager and piano man Carl Bolte led us in singing "God Bless America" to start the meeting rolling after President Matt Meyer called us to order. Wes Wingfield gave our invocation and tyro Dana Reese welcomed seven guests and a half dozen visiting Rotarians from across the country.

Bob Weir spoke for a Centennial Minute reviewing some of the "difficult decisions", such as considering meeting planning around favorite golf days, that Club 13 Directors have tackled over the years. Our youth exchange student Bo gave a thank you and farewell as she departs for her home in Thailand after spending a year with us.

Prez. Matt thanked Centennial Co-Chairs Sally Bibb and Tom Terry and their committee for excellent work in putting together the kickoff luncheon at Union Station. I tried to keep track but my pen gave out as he listed the approximate three dozen Rotarians that were key to that successful event.

Past President Chuck Vogt, Tom Van Dyke and Henry Leonard introduced three new members Eric Graham, Bob Moffat and Sally Nelson.

With 45 years of service Dave Norton and Dick McFarland headlined Rotarians receiving service pins. Gordon Beaham, Dick Berkley, Ed Hughes and John Miller were recognized for 40 years as members of Club 13. Bob Eltonhead received a 35 year service pin and 30 year pins were presented to Tom Bash, Carl DiCapo, Phil Kinney, Bill Popplewell, Ron Trachsel and Tom Davidson. Karl Bublitz, Dave Bywaters, Woody Davis, Gene Freeman, Hall Harsh, Jim Holmberg, Bob Hovey and Yong Kim received 25 year pins.

As summer heats up and the Rotary year draws to a close I look forward to seeing you at lunch next Thursday. Remember the future of Rotary is in your hands.
