Comfort Station - The 2009 -
Now $197K Challenge

This summer our campers enjoyed our new comfort station, including state of the art showers, bathroom facilities and three washers and dryers. The new facility should last us a half-century. The total cost was $503K. We have raised $246K. The Hall Family Foundation has offered a $40K Topping Grant once we reach an additional $217K. We recently received an additional Topping Grant of $20K from the Oppenstein Foundation, reducing the challenge goal to $197K.  To date, we have received $122,729.95 leaving us just $74,270.05 to go. We are 87% of the way there. Keep those checks coming... Thanks to all of those who have already donated to this cause. Contact our Rotary office for more information.  We can only succeed with your help.

A special edition of PROFILES IN LEADERSHIP for all members and guests

"Boomer's Bluff" by Woody Cozad                                  President, Cozad Company Government Relations

Public television TV guest commentator (Ruckus), lawyer, history scholar, skilled orator, political activist and patriot John C. "Woody" Cozad takes the Rotary podium again on July 29th. It is an inspired idea of such significance it will be filmed for continuing distribution through various media. Perhaps you recall the standing ovation that followed Woody's last appearance at Rotary two years ago. Then Woody related "Old Man Drummond’s Boats" a great story of courage and creative resolve during the Revolutionary War. This new talk is of that series.
Boomer's Bluff-The deficit and debt crisis and what we, especially the Baby Boomers, can do about it is an intriguing and original observation and proposition of Woody's own creation. Ever the historian with a vision for the future Woody, has framed this important thought in U.S. history and couched it in practicality for action now.
PLEASE NOTE SPECIAL SCHEDULE: To accommodate film production, this meeting will begin in the Count Basie Ballroom promptly at noon (no late seating due to filming requirements) with Mr. Cozad's address. Following the speech we will have a full lunch with a shortened meeting for a scheduled adjournment at the same 1:15 PM time.
This is a fine opportunity to show off Club 13's podium and leadership to guests. This is NOT a Guest day. The standard guest fee of $16.50 applies. It includes the presentation, lunch and parking. Please contact Janet to reserve for your guests.

Rummaging for Rotary Camp -- Sept. 10-11

The weather is finally warm and spring cleaning time is here! This year as you rummage through your basements, attics and garages keep the Rotary Youth Camp in mind. There will be a Rummage Sale at the Camp on September 10th and 11th this year to help raise money for the Camp. We will begin collecting items after August 17th (the last day for summer campers). You can bring your donations by the Camp or call Laurie, our Camp Superintendent to arrange for a pick up.

We will also be looking for volunteers to help set up before the event, "man" the area during the event and clean up afterwards.

President Ford Nelson opened the meeting by recognizing as greeters the Membership Classification and Qualification Committee this last Thursday. After the pledge, Bob Lager and Carl Bolte handled the music and Bill Nofsinger offered the invocation. Rick Usher welcomed six guests and a visiting Rotarian from the Topeka Downtown Rotary Club. Members in recovery are Past Presidents Chuck Fowler, and Karl Roscoe (who is recovering at home and has a new member application), George Bittner and Ross Marine.

Jerry Cooke introduced our speaker, Robert Frazier who gave us "A Provider's View of Health Care Reform". Bob provided a briefing on what is known of this new law. As a board member, consultant and Vice President of Support Services for all of Carondelet Health, Bob needs to plan for this major change. His challenge as full time Executive Vice President of Mission and Community Services is to prepare to implement regulations that have yet to be written; regulations that will change as interested parties add their concerns to implementing regulations yet to come. He drew from his many years as a management consultant and from his 22 years of service with Carondelet Health-St. Joseph/St. Mary Medical System to provide an understanding of what Health Care Reform could mean to hospitals and to people who use them.

There is not a lot of reform yet implemented from the new law. For health providers the concern is how to absorb 32,000,000 new people into an already broken system….And, how to pay for it? Providers face great concerns and lack real answers. The good news is that many of the 32,000,000 will be placed inside the health care system where they can be monitored for a healthier life rather than being outside the system where expensive emergency room crisis-to-crisis treatment is the norm.

Bob reports hearing different views on health insurance exchange and how it will implement. One certain change is higher costs for employers as adult children up to age 26 are added to their parents’ health insurance coverage. The Affordable Care Act adds 16,000,000 more on Medicaid. Medical payment cutbacks embedded in the Federal law are scheduled to fall on health care providers in several iterations. Medicare payments will reduce by 2.5% and more government insurance payment reductions follow. A 1% provider set-aside is mandated in the law. Does it come from provider operations? The current health care system operates on a 2.5% margin. The system needs a margin of 4% to 5% to survive and fund its annual modernization requirements.

Keep out of Recovery Bay folks.

New Club 13 Banner

The Centennial Committee is pleased to announce a new Club 13 banner. The current Club 13 banner has been used for over 25 years and has been a great representation of our Rotary Club. However, as we celebrate our Club's centennial, it is fitting to have a new club banner noting our 100 years of service. The heart has been in earlier versions of the Club 13 banner and continues to be a significant component of the new banner. Rotarian Scott Wagner lead the Centennial Committee in creating the new banner and the Club 13 Board of Directors has approved the design. The Rotary Office will alert members when the new banner is available.

Club 13 Supports International Projects

In the Rotary year 2009-2010, Club 13, in cooperation with other Rotary clubs supported 2 international projects in Mexico City.

In Mexico City, many schools have just enough water to occasionally flush toilets and hand washing is often only in the rainy season but not during the 8 dry months of the year. Drinking water is non-existent. The water tanks allow schools to store and filter water and therefore the children have fewer illnesses and a better educational environment.

Rotarians in Club 13 contributed a total of $2,000 for water tanks and filtration systems to be placed in schools in Mexico City and our District 6040 matched the amount with District Designated Funds. Together with funds from District 6780 in Tennessee and District 4170 in Mexico City, the total project was $21,525 and provided six tanks and filtration systems. The tanks were installed in six schools and in February, Rotarians Jan Armstrong and Sally Bibb visited one of the schools.

Through generous pledges from our Rotarians, Club 13 has also contributed $2,000 for kidney transplants of disadvantaged teens in Mexico City. This $73,600 project provided funds for 12 teens to have kidney transplants which included surgery preparation and follow up for both the recipients and donors. Nearly half of the project funds are donated by the Mexican National Transplant Foundation with the remaining funds donated by Rotary Clubs and Districts in Mexico City, Tennessee, Illinois, Indiana and Club 13. This is a great example of successful collaboration to make a difference in the world.

In the Rotary year, 2010-2011, Club 13 is asked to support 3 projects in Mexico City: another water tank and filtration system project, another kidney transplant project and a Girl’s Shelter project. The Shelter provides a safe environment for girls ages 5 through 18 who have been abused. The Shelter provides a dormitory, meals, counseling and some medical attention. The girls attend public school and some go home on weekends but others live in the Shelter full time. The project may include such items as bathroom upgrades, new washing machines and dryers, or playground equipment.

If interested in contributing towards these projects, please contact Janet in the Rotary office.

Rotary International Convention in New Orleans

Many Club 13 Rotarians traveled to Chicago in 2005 for the Rotary International Convention and then again to Los Angeles in 2008.  Everyone had a great time both at the convention activities and also the Club 13 dinner.  Mark your calendar for the RI Convention in New Orleans, May 22-25, 2011.  It will be tremendous fun!  The Rotary International President presiding over the New Orleans convention will be Ray Klinginsmith from Kirksville, Missouri.  The Hampton Inn & Suites New Orleans Convention Center has been designated the “Missouri” hotel  but will fill quickly.  Make your reservations today!  A $150 is required but is refundable if your plans change.  Book on-line at http://registration.experient-inc.com/ShowROT111/

Official Centennial Photo
While many Rotarians took interesting pictures at the centennial luncheon, the Official photo of the Club 13 Centennial is the outstanding group photo taken by Rotarian Jerry Crabtree. This historic photo will be seen in publications for decades.  Jerry also took an excellent photo of the Club 13 Past Presidents and has made both photos available to Rotarians. They can be purchased by contacting Janet in the Rotary office at a cost of $25 for an 8x10, $45 for an 11x14, and $75 for a 16x20. Jerry will generously donate 25% of the cost of each photo to the Rotary Youth Camp. The photos are posted on the Club 13 Centennial merchandise. www.rotary13.org/centennial
