This summer our campers enjoyed our new comfort station, including state of the art showers, bathroom facilities and three washers and dryers. The new facility should last us a half-century. Once we raise another $45K, we will receive topping grants of $40K from the Hall Family Foundation, and 20K from the Oppenstein Foundation.     We are 90% of the way there. Keep those checks coming... Thanks to all of those who have already donated to this cause. Contact our Rotary office or Jim Porter for more information.  We can only succeed with your help.

Photos for Centennial Magazine

Do you have photos of Club 13 Rotarians in action? Club 13 exemplifies Service Above Self and has been involved in service projects for 100 years. However, there are not many photos on record showing that spirit of service. Help the Centennial Magazine committee find candid photos of Rotarians giving service such as ringing bells, delivering dictionaries, selling newspapers, mowing or cleaning at the Youth Camp and collecting warm coats. Current photos are welcome and photos from many years ago are also welcome. Please email your photos to Centennial Magazine Chair Jane Lee at bjane.lee@gmail.com

Ukraine Trip Set for Early Spring

Calling all professors, teachers, former teachers, politicians and anyone who would like to stand up in front of a group of university students to tell them about life and government in the US of A. We have been invited back to Ukraine, in late April or early May, to spend a week in the university classrooms to do an intense review of what happens here for students who are studying English and to be interpreters. We'll also need at least one IT person to help with computerized presentations there. We will have help here to get the computerized stuff ready. We will also have help from the USUkraine organization in Washington with preparation. This will be the 10th "mission" trip by members and friends of Club 13, and will be the most intense. Contact Bob Lager at mandblager@kcnet.com quickly to get planning underway.

Annual Blood Drive Set for Jan. 6, 2011

Save a Life. Right Here, Right now!

Our community uses 580 pints of blood every day - 365 days a year. The Community Blood Bank need Club 13's help! They need this help now as this is a very slow time for blood donations and the need is always greater around holidays. Please volunteer to donate on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011, before, during or after our lunch at the Marriott Hotel.  If Thursday, Jan. 6 is not a good day for you, you may donate any time or at any of the neighborhood donation centers in Kansas and Missouri.   Just tell them you are donating in the name of Rotary Club #13.

Call Janet at our Rotary office 816/842-2322 and volunteer.

YOU ARE NEEDED - Questions, give Jerry Cooke a call at 816/942-0207.

Rotarians in action ...

Thanks to the many Rotarians who donated coats and warm clothing to Club 13's Annual Bill Brown Coat Drive for the past three Thursdays.  The Salvation Army will distribute them to those in Kansas City who need a warm coat through the cold and freezing winter.  (Pictured left is Martha Voight donating a coat to our Bill Brown Coat and Warm Clothing Chairman Kent Fulton and Tyrotarian Eric Van Beber.)

Thanks to all of our Bell-Ringers!

Fellow Rotary Club 13 Bell Ringers,

A note to thank each of you and your families and friends who braved the ice, sleet, and cold weather to carry on our great Rotary Club 13 tradition of Bell Ringing for the Salvation Army!

The Salvation Army hugely appreciates our commitment to help them during this vital annual drive, and in these tough economic times, this year was no exception!

A special thank you from Jennifer Nelsen, Dennis McKeehan, Jordan Clark and me to those of you who stayed late or stepped in to fill spots at the last moment! Thank you to those of you who were gracious enough to change locations and even move outside from the warmth of Oak Park Mall! To those who "rang" without bells the first Saturday at Ward Parkway, or were missing aprons, or kettles, and still persevered on behalf of the Salvation Army's good works!

For those who may have missed it, there was a very interesting front page story in Sunday's Kansas City Star about the Salvation Army's bell ringing. The article is more about those who are hired to ring, but it's an article we can all appreciate. In all the Salvation Army has 250 sites in the Kansas City area.

A transition year from one chair to the next always has its challenges, but thanks to the tremendous efforts of you our members, our co-chairs, past chairmen, and dedicated office, our Club completed another very successful year of Bell Ringing for the Salvation Army!

THANK YOU AND A VERY HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON TO ALL!

Tony Andresen
Salvation Army Bell Ringing Chair

ROTARIANS SHIP SCHOOL SUPPLIES TO HONDURAS
Friends United is a not-for-profit organization started by Independence Rotarian Charlotte Ruoff. The organization sets up and supports teacher resource centers in Honduras with the goal of improving the Honduran educational system. Rotarians and teachers from the Kansas City area have been accompanying Charlotte & Norman Ruoff on annual trips to Honduras for several years. Club 13 Rotarians who have participated on trips include John & MaryAnn Miller, Alan Warne & Joan Caulfield, Jan Armstrong and Sally Bibb. Photo is of Honduran school children receiving new pencils, tablets and other school supplies.
A recent initiative was to ship 20,000 pounds of school supplies and four Traveling Classrooms, which has a total value of approximately $45,000, from Kansas City to Tegucigalpa, Honduras. It took two years to make the arrangements and complete the shipping. The supplies were gathered and stored at Heart to Heart for months but their storage space dwindled and John Reynolds provided interim storage at Quick Delivery plus loaded the supplies into a FedEx truck. The US Air Force put the supplies into Honduras. The supplies are now in a Rotarian owned warehouse in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, and the next step is distribution to the resource centers across Honduras. Thanks to the generosity of Rotarians the collection, storage and shipment of the supplies was possible!

Last Thursday, Dec. 16, 2011 by Marilyn Stewart and Janet Ellis

We celebrated our Club's 100th Holiday Party Anniversary last Thursday night at the awesome Pershing Hall at the Hyatt Regency Crown.
Attendees were greeted by members from our current board of directors.
Chuck Eddy's Entertainment Committee put together an enjoyable holiday event.
As usual, Rusty Macy and the Hyatt staff created a joyful atmosphere and served us well. The food was fabulous and the desserts were super, awesome, delicious and non-caloric (NOT). Chuck Eddy's band and Lori Strawn's vocals supplied the just-right background for our dining pleasure, and later, great selections for dancing.
President Ford Nelson acknowledged Susan Prestia and the Auxiliary for gathering and staging another silent auction which netted $2,200 for the Rotary Youth Camp.
A bit of sad news was shared regarding Tony DiPardo, who suffered an aneurism but had successful surgery. Our thoughts and prayers goes out to the family and wish Tony only the best.
