Ukraine Trip Set for Early Spring
Calling all professors, teachers, former
teachers, politicians and anyone who would like to stand up in front
of a group of university students to tell them about life and
government in the US of A. We have been invited back to Ukraine, in
late April or early May, to spend a week in the university classrooms
to do an intense review of what happens here for students who are
studying English and to be interpreters. We'll also need at least one
IT person to help with computerized presentations there. We will have
help here to get the computerized stuff ready. We will also have help
from the USUkraine organization in Washington with preparation. This
will be the 10th "mission" trip by members and friends of Club 13, and
will be the most intense. Contact Bob Lager at
mandblager@kcnet.com quickly to get planning underway.
25% Discount for Foundation Fellows - Regular and Sustaining
Members!
In an effort to "close the gap" for our Comfort Care shortage, one
generous Rotarian has offered to donate $250 to the next 40 Rotarians
who become K.C. Rotary Club Foundation Fellows.
This program is good from now until Dec. 31,
2010.
You can receive this by making one check payable to the Foundation for
$750 or becoming a sustaining member ($100 this year and $100 each
year for the next six years and $50 on the seventh year.) This is tax
deductible.
Once your pledge is paid, you will receive a handsome plaque for your
home or office, as well as recognition at the Rotary Youth Camp. Plus,
you will have the satisfaction of paying off our advance for the
Comfort Care Station.
Please contact Jim Porter, Janet or
Marilyn at the Rotary office. It doesn't get any better than this!

K.C. Rotary Club Foundation
Last Thursday - Dec. 9, 2010 by Pete Burgess
Those born in December lined up to welcome members. President
Ford Nelson called the club to order and Ted Dalberg
led "Happy Birthday" followed by the singing of "God Bless America"
while red (not blue) blood donor Carl Bolte
accompanied. Ford led the pledge and John
Mark Clifton gave the invocation. Past President Bob
Weir gave memorial remarks for Lloyd Duncan
who passed away in November but was honored here today on the date
closest to Pearl Harbor Day because Lloyd was a survivor of the attack
on Pearl. Eric Bubb welcomed our six guests and
Houston's visiting Rotarian David King who joined us for a second
visit.
President Ford called Marilyn Stewart to the podium
to accept our thanks and very best wishes as she joins her husband in
retirement. The club honored Marilyn with a check to help on her
upcoming trip, and by presenting a memorial plaque to remind her of
the many Rotary events she has made successful. We learned that
Tony DiPardo is still in recovery and we eagerly
await his return. Camp staffer Lindsey Ripley has embarked on a
regimen that requires 20 chemo treatments.
Several announcements: Past President Matt Meyer
announced the results of the election and thanked everyone who allowed
their name to be put forward for an elective office – President Elect
Marc Horner told us that a camp assessment will
increase club dues – Jerry Cooke called for more
blood to be given on January 6th at the Marriott, Yardbird A & B -
Rusty Macy announced Greater Kansas City Day… and
yes, the Centennial Holiday Party is on the 16th.
Past President Chuck Vogt introduced Allison Basinger
who brought us a unique presentation on the problem of sexual assault
and violence. Her presentation featured high school players who
brought reality to the program by causing club members to stand up
when different forms of violence where announced. The program, called
Outrage, was very demonstrative of the problem, of the victims, and of
the need to educate citizens, gain safe homes and control the
violence.

Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011, before, during or after our lunch at the
Marriott Hotel.
Call Janet at our Rotary office 816/842-2322 and volunteer.

Rotarians Serve Lunch at the Kansas
City Community Kitchen
Members of Club 13's Community Service
Committee served a hearty lunch at the KC Community Kitchen on
Monday, Nov. 8 to men, women, and children who are homeless, part of
the growing population of "working
poor, " or both. Two fulfilling hours
were spent with other volunteers serving nearly 500 meals to a steady
stream of hungry Kansas Citians. In hairnets, aprons, and plastic
gloves, Kara Bennett, Lee Brumitt,
Jerry Cooke, Hal Lowenstein,
Bill Moran, and Paula
Willett (with Ford Nelson making a cameo
appearance) enjoyed the opportunity to put
"Service Above Self
" and help those who can't
afford a meal experience much-needed nutrition and sustenance.
Club 13's Community Service Committee
plans to serve lunch at the Community Kitchen periodically and
welcomes other members to join us. If you are interested, please
contact the chair of the committee, Bill Moran. It's
a great way to experience camaraderie and the joy of giving with your
fellow Rotarians. In addition to serving lunch, the Community Service
Committee is also working on the Blood Drive scheduled for January 6,
2011 and the Shoes for Orphan Souls project taking place February
through April, 2011, as well as other projects.
The KC Community Kitchen is a project of Episcopal Community
Services. It was formerly operated at the Grace and Holy Trinity
Church at 13th and Broadway but has been moved to 8th and Paseo to be
closer to the population it serves. The Kitchen serves lunch each
weekday of the year and has a base of 400 volunteers from churches,
civic groups, and businesses.
BOWLING NEWS - November 24
Henrik Andersen described his bowling skills today
as shockingly average. He also made the observation that the thing
about bowling is that no matter how badly you play; it is always
possible to get worse. Don't let him
fool you. He is much better than average.
Our other better than average bowlers today were: Rick Crouch, 277.
Let me repeat that...277. He had nine strikes in a row. He also
rolled a 249 (708 series). Dick Retrum 218, Dan
Couch, 214 & 204, Ted Middendorf 214 and he picked
up the 6,7 – 10 split. John Reynolds 212 and Dave
Boone 201 and Eric Bubb picked up the 4 – 10 split.
Great bowling all.
BOWLING NEWS - December 1
According to Al Tikwart, everyone was on a roll
today. I think that's a play on words,
don't you? Ted Middendorf
258, Dan Couch 247 and Brian Powell (first
year rookie) rolled 215 & 203 his first ever (605 series),
Sherilyn Seitz picked up the 6-10 – 7-8 split and
Dennis McKeehan was four pins short of a 200 game.
Brian Powell's
bowling skills seem to improve each week. The interesting thing about
it is that he uses an alley ball off the rack. It makes you wonder
how he would do with a new professionally drilled ball.
BOWLINGS NEWS - December 8
Today was filled with memorable achievements. Dick Retrum
rolled his highest game in the last few years, 238 and a 626 series.
Mike Griggs (first year rookie) had a 222 and
Dennis O'Dell bowled a
204. Dennis was delighted, his team was pleased and
the league was thrilled to hear about it. He had not reached a 200
game in five year. Well done all.
The Weir-Do's dropped to third place
this week. The Shuddabins are tied for first with
"I Have No Idea"
with 35 wins each.
Happy Holidays…….Happy Bowling.
