Comfort Station - The 2009 -
Now $197K
Challenge
This summer our campers enjoyed our new comfort
station, including state of the art showers, bathroom facilities and
three washers and dryers. The new facility should last us a half-century. The total cost was $503K. We have raised $246K. The Hall Family Foundation has offered a $40K Topping Grant once
we reach an additional $217K. We recently received an additional Topping Grant of $20K from the
Oppenstein Foundation, reducing the challenge goal to $197K. To
date, we have received $122,729.95
leaving us just $74,270.05 to go. We are 87% of the way there. Keep
those checks coming... Thanks to all of those who have already
donated to this cause. Contact our Rotary office for more information.
We can only succeed with your help.

New Club 13 Banner
The Centennial Committee is pleased to announce a new Club 13 banner.
The current Club 13 banner has been used for over 25 years and has been
a great representation of our Rotary Club. However, as we celebrate our
Club's centennial, it is fitting to have a new club banner noting our
100 years of service. The heart has been in earlier versions of the Club
13 banner and continues to be a significant component of the new banner.
Rotarian Scott Wagner lead the Centennial Committee in creating the new
banner and the Club 13 Board of Directors has approved the design. The
Rotary Office will alert members when the new banner is available.
Official Centennial Photo
While
many Rotarians took interesting pictures at the centennial luncheon, the
Official photo of the Club 13 Centennial is the outstanding group photo
taken by Rotarian Jerry Crabtree. This historic photo
will be seen in publications for decades. Jerry
also took an excellent photo of the Club 13 Past Presidents and has made
both photos available to Rotarians. They can be purchased by contacting
Janet in the Rotary office at a cost of $25 for an 8x10, $45 for an
11x14, and $75 for a 16x20. Jerry will generously
donate 25% of the cost of each photo to the Rotary Youth Camp. The
photos are posted on the Club 13 Centennial merchandise.

Club 13 Supports International Projects
In
the Rotary year 2009-2010, Club 13, in cooperation with other Rotary
clubs supported 2 international projects in Mexico City.
In Mexico City, many schools have just enough water to occasionally
flush toilets and hand washing is often only in the rainy season but not
during the 8 dry months of the year. Drinking water is non-existent. The
water tanks allow schools to store and filter water and therefore the
children have fewer illnesses and a better educational environment.
Rotarians in Club 13 contributed a total of $2,000 for water tanks and
filtration systems to be placed in schools in Mexico City and our
District 6040 matched the amount with District Designated Funds.
Together with funds from District 6780 in Tennessee and District 4170 in
Mexico City, the total project was $21,525 and provided six tanks and
filtration systems. The tanks were installed in six schools and in
February, Rotarians Jan Armstrong and Sally Bibb visited one of the
schools.
Through generous pledges from our Rotarians, Club 13 has also
contributed $2,000 for kidney transplants of disadvantaged teens in
Mexico City. This $73,600 project provided funds for 12 teens to have
kidney transplants which included surgery preparation and follow up for
both the recipients and donors. Nearly half of the project funds are
donated by the Mexican National Transplant Foundation with the remaining
funds donated by Rotary Clubs and Districts in Mexico City, Tennessee,
Illinois, Indiana and Club 13. This is a great example of successful
collaboration to make a difference in the world.
In the Rotary year, 2010-2011, Club 13 is asked to support 3 projects in
Mexico City: another water tank and filtration system project, another
kidney transplant project and a Girl’s Shelter project. The Shelter
provides a safe environment for girls ages 5 through 18 who have been
abused. The Shelter provides a dormitory, meals, counseling and some
medical attention. The girls attend public school and some go home on
weekends but others live in the Shelter full time. The project may
include such items as bathroom upgrades, new washing machines and
dryers, or playground equipment.
If interested in contributing towards these projects, please contact
Janet in the Rotary office.
Note: Sally Bibb and Jan Armstrong
will give an update on the water project in New
Mexico at the August 5 Rotary meeting.
WANTED: Auction Items for Camp Enterprise
A key component of Camp Enterprise involves a
live and silent auction on the last day. All weekend, presenters award
CE dollars to the students based on their participation in various
activities. We hope to get lots of exciting prizes that teenagers would
enjoy. Think about what a junior in high school would appreciate. No
item is too small! You can bring the items to the Rotary office, or we
will make arrangements to pick them up. DEADLINE to donate is Sept. 10.
Diane Scott & Dennis McKeehan, auction
co-chairs.
Rummaging for
Rotary Camp -- Sept. 10-11
The weather is finally warm and spring cleaning time is here! This year
as you rummage through your basements, attics and garages keep the
Rotary Youth Camp in mind. There will be a Rummage Sale at the Camp on
September 10th and 11th this year to help raise money for the Camp. We
will begin collecting items after August 17th (the last day for summer
campers). You can bring your donations by the Camp or call Laurie, our
Camp Superintendent to arrange for a pick up at 816.309.6651.
We will also be looking for volunteers to help set up before the event,
"man" the
area during the event and clean up afterwards.
Last Thursday - July 22, 2010 by Pete Burgess
Club Assembly kicked off at 10:00 beginning a full plate of events on
July 22, 2010. Committee chairs promise another great Rotary year. Our
regular meeting was held in the Colonial Ballroom at the Muehlebach where
Ford Nelson presided right on schedule. Charlie
Huffman and Carl Bolte teamed to lead the
singing. Then after the pledge, Duane Benton added the
invocation and Bob Moffat welcomed six guests and a
visiting Rotarian.
Evie Craig, chair of the Downtown Committee, took the
podium and honored Faultless Starch/Bon Ami with a recognition plaque
for being selected as the company of the year. Faultless Starch began
here in 1887 and produces products used worldwide including its famous
Bon Ami cleanser. The company is still run by the Beaham family with
Gordon T. Beaham, III, the great-grandson of founder
Major Thomas G. Beaham, serving as Chairman and Co-CEO; Robert
B. Beaham, Vice-Chairman, Treasurer and Co-CEO; and David G.
Beaham, President and Co-CEO; are members of the fifth generation of
family members to be active in the business
Past president Myron Sildon introduced his long time
friend, our speaker, Adam Bold who co-chaired Kansas City Day this year
and is a great advocate for underprivileged and disabled kids. Adam
spoke on entrepreneurship explaining how he opted out of his family's
CPA tradition, fell out with management policy at the brokerage firm
where he worked, and left them to create The Mutual Fund Store which he
built into the fifth largest independent investment firm in the United
States in less than 15 years. His leadership is clearly focused on a
vision, supported by hiring the best people, knowing them well,
inspiring them, and rewarding them well for their loyalty. The Mutual
Fund Store began and remains headquartered in Overland Park. It is
growing as a systematized fee based management company that offers
personalized management advice to the niche of investors with $60,000 to
$500,000 to invest. Adam's company has brought $4.7 billion under
management and serves 30,000 clients.
Club 13 congratulates Adam on his success and applauds his contributions
to Kansas City.
