Comfort Station - The 2009 -
Now $197K Challenge

This summer our campers enjoyed our new comfort station, including state of the art showers, bathroom facilities and three washers and dryers. The new facility should last us a half-century. The total cost was $503K. We have raised $246K. The Hall Family Foundation has offered a $40K Topping Grant once we reach an additional $217K. We recently received an additional Topping Grant of $20K from the Oppenstein Foundation, reducing the challenge goal to $197K.  To date, we have received $119,129.95 leaving us just $77,870.05 to go. We are 84% of the way there. Keep those checks coming... Thanks to all of those who have already donated to this cause. Contact our Rotary office for more information.  We can only succeed with your help.

Registration starts at 10:00 a.m. Lunch, drinks and a silent auction will be provided at the course with a fabulous steak dinner at the camp immediately following golf. We are also seeking donations for hole prizes, auction items, and giveaways. Call the Rotary office or a member of your golf committee if you have any questions. The cost is $150 per golfer, $600 for a team of four, please make your reservation early as there are limited spaces available and we will be opening registration to other rotary clubs and potential members. We'll be distributing flyers as well so watch the Buzz Saw for further information. We look forward to seeing you for a wonderful day of fun and fellowship!

Ecology Day, April 29, 2010 needs your help!

The Ecology Committee is seeking volunteers for a Rotary Club 13 signature event, Ecology Day 2010, on Thursday, April 29. Held at the Kansas City Zoo, Ecology Day is an educational experience for elementary school students in the Greater Kansas City metro area, designed to raise their awareness and understanding of ecological issues, ecosystems, natural habitats and the creatures with whom we share our environment. Approximately 150 students, their teachers and adult supervisors will attend a session at the Zoo, which consists of a rotating series of workshops held by local educators. Volunteer educators and Zoo personnel will hold 20-25 minute "workshops" through which students will rotate.

Club 13 asks that its members provide at least 10 volunteers to assist at this event. Rotary volunteers assist the Zoo with set-up for Ecology Day, assist presenters, help teachers move their students from workshop to workshop, set up lunch for the presenters, and facilitate other logistical tasks. This volunteer commitment is from 9:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. on April 29, 2010. Please respond to the Club 13 office or John Jespersen, Ecology Committee Chair, at jsprsn@yahoo.com, if you are interested. Thanks for your consideration.

Rummaging for Rotary Camp

The weather is finally warm and spring cleaning time is here! This year as you rummage through your basements, attics and garages keep the Rotary Youth Camp in mind. There will be a Rummage Sale at the Camp on September 10th and 11th this year to help raise money for the Camp. We will begin collecting items after August 17th (the last day for summer campers). You can bring your donations by the Camp or call Laurie, our Camp Superintendent to arrange for a pick up.

We will also be looking for volunteers to help set up before the event, "man" the area during the event and clean up afterwards.

BOWLING ... by Dick Retrum         (April 14, 2010)

Today's bowling highlights include Dave Boone's 234, Troy Harrison's 209, Bob Weir picking up the 6,7-10 split, Ann O'Dell picking up the 6,9-7 split and Marilyn Lager (this was amazing) picked up the 1,3 – 7,10 split. She claims this was her year for splits. "I've had so many this year, its about time I made a spectacular shot." Well done all. Congratulations.

Today marked the end of league competition. Next week (April 21st) the Championship match will be played between (as predicted) the all female Glitzy Gals with a combined average of 121 and the power house "Off-N-On" team with a 163 average. The handicapping that is technically used to even out the competition might be a real hardship for the Off-N-On's. Needless to say, it will be fun to watch. Good luck to both teams.

The Bowling Banquet is scheduled for May 25th (Tuesday) at the Carriage Club. Look for more details soon.

Last Thursday - April 15, 2010  by Pete Burgess

Harmony Explosion hit the club on April 15th. Wasn't the tax day gremlin come to disrupt life. Fortunately it was the two talented winners of senior boys and girls quartet competitions. Together they sang “The Star Spangled Banner” then the girls sang "Lazy Day" and the boys preformed "I Wanna Live Til I Die". When we came in to the welcome of our Centennial Committee, they gave no hint of Tom Terry's Mia Culpa Minute that followed after President Matt Meyer opened the meeting. Matt first introduced a proud Harlan Stamper who introduced the two winning quartets from Olathe East High School.

Tom Bash gave the invocation and Marty Mease welcomed guests. Then came Tom Terry who revised history… again ... with a Centennial Minute revised explanation of Art Funk and the 1929 inception of Rotary International. Members Chuck Fowler, Jim Shultz, Debra Shultz, George Bittner and Ed Corley are in recovery. Now hear this… Club 13 won the 16th annual Literacy Kansas City Spelling Bee. Mark Bertrand tried to pronounce the winning word, then gave up and presented an impressive trophy to our the winning team. After some coaxing from the podium, the team and fans launched into their winning R-O-T-A-R-Y cheer. Can you believe that the Corporate Spelling Bee generated $87,000 for Literacy Kansas City?  Yes, it did!

President Matt reminded members to sign up for our Annual Golf Classic, our camp's fundraiser for operations, which is set for June 7 at Lakewood Oaks Golf Club.

Paula Willett introduced Alvin Sykes who spoke about his commitment to re-opening civil rights crime cases and bringing the guilty to justice. April 15, 1983 marked the 4th successful civil rights conviction. He has been pushing the government to re-open old cases. On October 7, 2008 President George Bush signed the "Unsolved Civil Rights Crime Act" which provided $135 million to find all perpetrators and bring them to justice. There were 108 cases at that time and six remain. Alvin's effort is now turning toward South Africa.
