Comfort Station - The 2009 - Now $197K Challenge

This summer our campers enjoyed our new comfort station, including state of the art showers, bathroom facilities and three washers and dryers. The new facility should last us a half-century. The total cost was $503K. We have raised $246K. The Hall Family Foundation has offered a $40K Topping Grant once we reach an additional $217K. We recently received an additional Topping Grant of $20K from the Oppenstein Foundation, reducing the challenge goal to $197K.  To date, we have received $108,679.95 leaving us just $88,320.05 to go. We are 82% of the way there. Keep those checks coming...

Thanks to all of those who have already donated to this cause. Contact our Rotary office for more information.  We can only succeed with your help.

We're gaining on our Shoes for Orphan Souls goal but we still need your help.

To-date, we have collected funds for
960 pairs of shoes.
We have a huge goal to reach so please give whatever you can to help us make our goal.  If you see shoes cheap, feel free to buy them and bring them to Rotary. However, if you want me to do your shopping, make your check payable to K.C.R.C. Foundation, and write "shoes" in the memo line.
Remember the kids are counting on us. Thank you.

Our speaker for the day will be Dr. Teng-Kee Tan, dean at the Henry W. Bloch School of Business and Public Administration at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

THE "WIN THE WAR" CONVENTION
by Steve Dicus

Billed as the "Convention of all Rotary conventions¸" the Ninth Convention of Rotary was convened in Kansas City¸ Missouri in June¸ 1918. Registration exceeded 4¸300 and more than 90% of all Rotary clubs were represented. Particularly impressed with the great number of visitors and "their fine character¸" the managers of the Baltimore and Muehlebach hotels both claimed that it was the "finest convention Kansas City had ever entertained." Both hotels achieved record revenues during the week of the Convention.
One minute of every day was set aside for prayer for the Allied Armies. The armistice of "The Great War" would come nearly five months after the Convention¸ on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918.
Regarded by some as the greatest accomplishment of the Convention¸ and thought to be too big of an undertaking¸ was the "automobile ride." The Transportation Committee succeeded in filling 1¸003 cars with visitors who were given a 35-mile tour of Kansas City¸ already widely known for its parks and boulevards. One commentator remarked that it was the greatest thing that could have been done for the advertisement of Kansas City.
The outstanding relaxation feature took place at Electric Park¸ then considered to be one of the most beautiful amusement parks in the world. On one night¸ conventioneers were treated to a colorful water display created by electric fountains¸ after which 100¸000 electric lights faded into darkness for a patriotic fireworks display.
Russell Greiner¸ early Club 13 leader and former President of what would later become Rotary International¸ was given a Swiss watch by members of Club 13 as an expression of their appreciation for his "tireless energy¸ ability and efficiency which contributed to the success of the Convention." It was reported that he was so overcome with emotion that for once in his life he was unable to make a speech.

BOWLING ... by Dick Retrum         (March 17, 2010)

Bowlers usually don't like distractions once league play has started. The important thing is to stay focused on the game. But today we all made an exception when Noel Sotta (Peter's wife) arrived at the Ward Parkway Lanes with their new baby boy¸ Devon. He was born on March 11. Congratulations and thanks for the distraction.
Bob Weir and Bob Katcha have found their own distractions or some
might consider it foul play. Referee whistles and bag popping. You need to ask them for details. It's either a new high or low in bowling. You be the judge.
Our high games today were: Rick Crouch 209¸ Maurice Brownlee 203¸
Dan Couch 202 and Dave Boone 202. Barbara Martin picked up the 5-7 split and Jane Lee rolled her highest game ever…191. Well done all.
It is pretty clear¸ with just four weeks left, the Glitzy Gals (32 wins) will hold the the first place position and challenge the Off-N-On's in a roll-off on April 21 to determine the championship team for 2010.
Al Tikwart has been placed on injured reserves for the remainder of the season. He had shoulder surgery last week. But he insists that rehab, strength training and fan mail during the off-season will make him competitive for next year's draft. Thank you Al. We appreciate your enthusiasm and the example you are setting for the rest of us who are putting off surgery.

Decisions made by a judge have tremendous impact. For they carry the might to forever change lives on the most basic levels. Our speaker knows that first-hand. Judge John R. O'Malley, who served 20 years as a judge on the Circuit Court of Jackson County spoke March 18. Introduced by his brother our own Patrick O'Malley he also was a member of the U.S. Army Reserve JAG Corps for 26 years retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2008.

As an adjunct faculty member at various area universities and community colleges¸ Judge O'Malley has also taught subjects including legal ethics and business law.

He cited the parade of horrific cases that have come before his bench:
• A young girl waiting for the school bus kidnapped and murdered
• A little boy killed when he was dragged by a car stolen by a carjacker
• Two of three triplets starved to death by a mother whose defense was multiple personalities¸ a phenomenon then doubted by Judge O'Malley. "But after I observed her"he said¸"I believe it now."
• The famous "Precious Doe" case involving a child
• The crossbow murder in northern Missouri where the three murderers set out to kill dressed in a devil's mask¸ a skeleton mask and clown suit
• The serial murder suspect whose DNA did not match the crime scene…but did match that in 13 other cases
• The policeman who stormed a fugitive's suspected hideout¸only to be shot and killed by an elderly man defending his home…while the fugitive watched from across the street
• The sword-swallower from Cuba who slit his victim's throat¸ then carefully wrapped the blades and swallowed them

He told of one man who approached a policeman and asked¸ "What if I took out a gun and shot you." The policeman replied¸  "I guess I wouldn't have to answer any more stupid questions. "

He told of one rape victim whose story was doubted by police. Undaunted¸ she drew a picture of her rapist¸ distributed it extensively…and her attacker was identified and arrested. Maybe the force should hire her.

Members of the Greater Kansas City Day Committee served as greeters¸ and the meeting was called to order by President Matt Meyer who also led the pledge to the flag.

Bob Lager sang the second verse of  "Danny Boy¸" (the first sung last week)¸ then led us in a patriotic song. Ross Marine gave the invocation and Dick Helmuth welcomed visitors.

Dick Retrum delivered the Centennial Minute, written by Bob Weir¸ recounting the history of the Club 13 bowling league that continues to this day. The league was organized in 1916¸ according to one record. Two subsequent presidents¸ however¸ claimed the league was started under their watch. (We bowlers prefer the 1916 version.) The first bowling smack-down between the Club 13 and St. Louis leagues was in 1925. Of course, we won. And that competition continues to this day.

In other announcements:
• Chuck Fowler¸ Jim Shultz and George Bittner are still in sick bay.
• We still need shoes or donations to meet our goal of 1,500 pairs for the Shoes for Orphan Souls project that will benefit children in Haiti. Make checks payable to the KC Rotary Club Foundation.
• The Entertainment Committee is planning a Wine Tasting Party April 20 at the new J.E. Dunn Corporate Headquarters for $20/person or $35/couple. RSVP to Rotary office.
• Don't forget to sign up to help sell newspapers on Greater Kansas City Day April 5¸ a major fund-raiser for the camp. • Curt Watkins announced that April 8 is our next Guest Day with speaker, Dr. Teng-Kee Tan¸ dean of the UMKC School of Business and Public Administration. He also reminded us of the Profiles in Leadership program March 23 with civic leader Carol Marinovich.
• Pete Sotta (father of a new one-week-old son) reminded us of the upcoming Golf Tournament June 7¸ also a camp fund-raiser. We need players and sponsors. It's open to Rotarians and the public. (Congratulations on the little one also go out to mom Noel Sotta, also a Club 13 member.)
• Funds are still needed to raise the $3¸000 entry fee for the Rotary spelling team destined for the Literacy Kansas City Corporate Spelling Bee April 8. Team members are Ann Johnson and Jane Lee¸ both Club 13 members¸ Mike Dean¸ husband of member Marla Svoboda¸ and Valerie Meyers¸ Myron Sildon's secretary.
