2011-2012 President
Marc Horner.
Dear Fellow Rotarians,
This year’s theme from RI President Kalyan Banerjee “Reach Within to improve Humanity” is one that I find truly inspiring. I appreciate the theme due to his central principle that it is the individual Rotarian through their growth and individual efforts who will change Rotary. He states that “We must be the instrument of change we wish to see…” With his emphasis on family, continuity and change he touches the core issues we need to address as Rotarians.
We are a club with a wonderful heritage of accomplishment. Over 100 years in operation, we have two former Rotary International Presidents to our credit, two International Conventions under our belt and we made the first donation to the Rotary Foundation ever made by a club or individual. We have over 86 years of running a successful outreach to the handicapped and disadvantaged youth of our community through our operation of the Rotary Youth Camp. We have donated tens of thousands of dollars of shoes to the orphans of the world. We have funded successful water projects in several countries and we have even delivered a fire truck to Central America thanks to the efforts of a committee lead by our President-Elect Jerry Cooke. We have involved over thirty Rotary clubs from three districts in our Greater Kansas City Day project to raise funds not only for our youth camp but for other local charities as well. This project has raised over one million dollars over the last twenty three years to help run our Youth Camp and to build our Foundation into a fund with over four million dollars currently in it.
The true success of our club however will be in how we change and adjust to our second century of service. We need to build a younger more diverse group of leaders to tackle the issues that this club will be faced with going forward. We need to develop new ways to communicate to our members and the local community the great work that Rotary is doing in Kansas City and around the world. We need to use our Vocational Service Committee to develop the future leaders of our community, this club, our District and Rotary International We need to add more value to the Club 13 membership experience to keep Rotarians engaged and active in the five areas of service. We need to improve our efforts in support of the New Generations area of Service through effectively using all of the programs of Rotary International and our work with the schools and the young adults of Kansas City. We have the means within each of us to change the world and what better way to do it than working together through Rotary! Let’s use this next Rotary year 2011-2012 to make the phrase “I am a Rotarian and a member of Club 13” something everyone in Kansas City wants to be able to say.
Thanks for all that you do for Rotary!
Marc Horner
